Harald Anton “Toni” Schumacher is a former German goalkeeper who now works as a TV football analyst and is frequently invited to participate in events and panel discussions.
Born in Düren on March 6, 1954, Toni Schumacher began his professional career in 1972 with 1.FC Köln. There, he established himself as a national team player and a goalkeeper of world-class caliber. During his tenure at 1.FC Köln, he secured the DFB Cup three times, including the remarkable double in 1978. He was honored as “Germany’s Footballer of the Year” in both 1984 and 1986. Schumacher also achieved great success with the German national team, becoming European champion in 1980 and finishing as World Cup runner-up in 1982 and 1986.

In 1987, Schumacher departed from 1.FC Köln. Following his time there, he spent one season with FC Schalke 04 before moving to Turkey, where he played for Fenerbahce Istanbul for three years. During his stint with Fenerbahce, he won the Turkish championship in 1989.
Although his active playing career seemed to be over, Toni returned to the Bundesliga in 1991, appearing in eight matches for FC Bayern Munich. He concluded his career as a goalkeeper coach at Borussia Dortmund, where he played his final Bundesliga game on May 18, 1996, earning his second German championship as a player.
In 1987, Toni released his book “Anpfiff: Enthüllung über den deutschen Fußball” (Whistle: Revelations about German Football), which reached No. 1 on the Spiegel bestseller list. The book sold 300,000 copies in Germany and over 1.5 million worldwide. His teammates considered him reckless, as the book’s publication led to his suspension from “his” 1.FC Köln and ended his career with the German national team. Toni’s intention was simply to be truthful, as he had previously raised these issues multiple times without any consequences.
Toni Schumacher served as Vice-President of 1.FC Köln from 2012 to 2019 and remains a well-known and respected TV expert.
