Marc Wallert: Resilient in the Face of Crises – Building Strength.

Marc Wallert experienced being a hostage. In 2000, he and his parents were abducted by the Islamist terrorist group Abu Sayyaf while vacationing in Malaysia and taken to the Philippine island of Jolo. He spent nearly five months captive deep in the jungle. After enduring long days of terror, he and his parents were eventually freed. Safety was never guaranteed.

The intense jungle experience made Marc Wallert an expert in resilience. He states, “I survived the trauma of my kidnapping mainly by believing in a positive outcome.” At the same time, he cautions against overly optimistic thinking like “nothing will happen.” He considers ignoring real dangers very risky and advised in an interview with Deutschlandfunk Kultur: “It is important not to confuse good optimism with bad optimism. In crises, you must not assume it will be over quickly but prepare for the long haul.”
