Born in Ravensburg in 1964 and raised in Bielefeld, Kai Diekmann started his journalism career after completing training at the Axel Springer School of Journalism. He then held roles as parliamentary correspondent, political editor, and editor-in-chief before leading BILD from 2001 to 2015. After nearly thirty years at Axel Springer, he transitioned into entrepreneurship with StoryMachine, a communications agency for the digital era, alongside further roles as a consultant, author, and commentator on media, politics, and leadership.

Currently, he is an entrepreneur, founder, and advisor working at the crossroads of media, communication, digital transformation, and leadership. After departing from Axel Springer in 2017, he co-founded the communications agency StoryMachine in Berlin alongside Philipp Jessen. In 2023, he released his book ‘Ich war BILD’ (I was BILD), offering insights into power, media, and the workings of the Berlin Republic.
