After studying German, politics, and sociology at the University of Göttingen with the aim of becoming a Gymnasium teacher, Sigmar Gabriel (*1959) worked as an instructor in vocational adult education at the Bildungswerk der Niedersächsischen Volkshochschulen until 1990.

Gabriel became active in children’s and youth work early on through the SPD-affiliated youth group “Sozialistische Jugend Deutschlands – Die Falken” (Socialist Youth of Germany – The Falcons) and joined the SPD in 1977. Between 1987 and 1998, he served on the Goslar district council, and from 1990 to 2005, he was a directly elected member of the Lower Saxony state parliament, where he also participated in the environment committee for several years. While a councilor in his hometown Goslar from 1991 to 1999, he chaired the environment committee. From 1994 to 1999, he held various roles within the SPD parliamentary group in Lower Saxony, culminating as its chairman. In 1999, he was elected Minister President of Lower Saxony, a position he held until 2003.
Sigmar Gabriel serves as Chairman of Atlantik-Brücke e.V., is a member of the Trilateral Commission and the European Council on Foreign Relations. He also sits on the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group and the Advisory Board of Deloitte. Additionally, he acts as a policy advisor and European affairs expert for the U.S. consulting firm Eurasia Group, has been a member of Deutsche Bank’s Supervisory Board since May 2020, and has chaired the Supervisory Board of Thyssen-Krupp Steel Europe since April 2022.
Since June 2018, he has been an author for Holtzbrinck Verlag. Sigmar Gabriel also teaches at the University of Bonn and began a research fellowship at Harvard University in fall 2018.
From 1999 to 2005, Gabriel was a member of the SPD party executive committee. He served as chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany from 2009 to 2017 and has been a directly elected member of the German Bundestag since 2005. Between 2005 and 2009, he was Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet. In Merkel’s third cabinet, he held the roles of Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy and Vice Chancellor from 2013 to 2017, followed by his service as Federal Foreign Minister until 2018.
