Wolfgang Bosbach, a professional lawyer, is among the most well-known and respected politicians of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He is noted for his firm convictions, resilience, and capacity to face opposition, even from within his own party.

Born in 1952, Wolfgang Bosbach completed high school and trained as a commercial specialist, working in various roles including as a supermarket manager. He pursued business administration studies at the Rheinische Akademie in Cologne and later earned his Abitur, the German equivalent of the baccalaureate. In 1991, he finished his law degree at the University of Cologne by passing the second state exam and subsequently joined a law firm in Bergisch-Gladbach.

Since 1972, Wolfgang Bosbach has been a CDU member and served on the Rheinisch-Bergisch District Council from 1975 to 1979.

He then dedicated 20 years to the Bergisch-Gladbach municipal council. In 1994, Bosbach was directly elected to the German Bundestag for the first time and has been re-elected five times since. He enjoys a strong political support base that has remained loyal throughout his career.

From 2003 to 2005, he held the position of deputy chairman of the CDU state party in North Rhine-Westphalia, and starting in 2000, he served as deputy leader of the CDU/CSU Bundestag parliamentary group for justice and internal affairs. Between 2009 and 2015, Bosbach chaired the Bundestag Committee on Internal Affairs, consistently aiming to balance community internal security with individual civil liberties.

Wolfgang Bosbach acts as a substitute member of the Legal Committee and the Committee for the Election of Judges. He participates in several supervisory and advisory boards, including the ZDF Television Board, the transparency organization “Menschen für Menschen” (the Karlheinz Böhm aid charity for Ethiopia), and FC Cologne. Additionally, from 2000 to 2006, he was a trustee of the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future.”

The CDU politician has received numerous accolades, such as the “Bul le Mérite” order of merit from the German Federal Police and the civil courage award from the “Friends of Heinrich Heine” in Düsseldorf.
