Born in West Berlin in 1961, Guido Buchwald started his professional journey with Stuttgart Kickers in 1979. In 1983, he transferred to VfB Stuttgart, quickly establishing himself as one of Germany’s top central defenders. During his time with VfB, he secured two German championships, won the DFL Super Cup, and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1989. His remarkable performance in the 1990 World Cup final, where he effectively neutralized Diego Maradona, was pivotal in securing the title and earned him the nickname ‘Diego’.
Following his playing career, he moved to Japan and became the coach of the Urawa Red Diamonds, leading them to victories in the championship, Super Cup, and Cup.
