Gordon Herbert served as the head coach of the German national basketball team, guiding them to their first-ever world championship at the 2023 FIBA World Championship held in Japan and the Philippines.

During their journey to the gold medal, the German team achieved a remarkable 113:111 victory over the USA’s NBA stars in the semi-finals. In the World Cup final, Gordon Herbert and the German “Dream Team” were crowned undefeated basketball world champions.

As the head coach of FC Bayern Munich Basketball, Gordon Herbert led his team to become German champions in 2025. Beginning in the summer of 2026, Herbert will take on the role of head coach for the Canadian men’s national team. Originally from Penticton, British Columbia, he will prepare Canada’s basketball team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Who is Gordon Herbert?

Gordon Herbert (born February 16, 1959, in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada) is a Canadian-Finnish basketball coach and former player. Until mid-December 2025, he was the head coach of FC Bayern Munich in the Basketball Bundesliga and EuroLeague.

Herbert began his playing career in Finland, where he competed professionally for twelve years. After retiring in 1994, he started coaching in Finland and later led teams in Germany, France, Greece, and Canada. With the Frankfurt Skyliners, he won the German championship in 2004 and the FIBA Europe Cup in 2016.

From 2021 to 2024, Herbert was the head coach of the German national basketball team, guiding them to a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championship and the world title in 2023. Following the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, he resigned as national coach and assumed the head coach position at FC Bayern Munich.
